CBASP@IMI

Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) was developed specifically for the treatment of persistent depressive disorder (PDD) (McCullough, 2000) and, based on a growing number of positive studies, can be described as an empirically supported treatment (e.g., Negt et al., 2016). However, comparatively high non-response and relapse rates (Schramm et al., 2017) warrant further optimization of the therapy. Significant and long-lasting therapeutic success appears to be facilitated by a long duration of therapy and consistent application of the learned CBASP strategies in daily life—in other words, a high dose of CBASP.

Although CBASP is becoming increasingly widespread, and growing interest among outpatient therapists is promoting its dissemination, there is currently no comprehensive CBASP therapy service, particularly in rural areas, and few trained therapists or available therapy slots. The use of internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) offers a way to support affected individuals over a longer period.

Due to its relatively high level of structure, focus on interpersonal learning, and numerous exercises, CBASP appears particularly well-suited to being supplemented by IMIs, thus supporting individuals in applying the strategies in their daily lives (empowering them to help themselves). It can be assumed that the resulting higher therapy dose and longer application will improve long-term treatment success and increase patients' autonomy and self-efficacy.
