CBASP as an app-based intervention
In cooperation with the medical device-certified app Moodpath, a blended CBASP therapy approach has been developed. Alongside outpatient or inpatient CBASP therapy, patients use the Moodpath app with the CBASP-specific course CBASPath. This app-based course empowers patients to independently deepen the content developed in therapy through exercises between sessions. App content can be accessed, discussed, or reviewed during therapy sessions.
CBASPath consists of eight modules that build upon each other, with up to seven exercises to be completed alongside therapy, and four additional independent exercises (situational analyses and IDÜs) that can be accessed at any time. For example, patients can complete interactive exercises on the Kiesler Circle, learn to create a situational analysis through a video-based exercise, or reflect on and document imprints and transference hypotheses developed in therapy.
CBASPath Through blended use during outpatient or inpatient CBASP therapy, therapy content can be conveniently deepened at home or on the go via smartphone, specific CBASP strategies can be integrated into daily life, and these can be discussed further with the therapist in the next session. The intensity and frequency of the in-person and in-person therapy sessions can vary depending on the patient's needs, requirements, and progress. Especially at the beginning of the therapy, it is advisable to regularly revisit and discuss content completed by the patient (particularly situational analyses and individualized reflections) in therapy. Towards the end of successful therapy, CBASPath should be usable as a purely self-management tool and can continue to be used independently after successful therapy.
By integrating CBASPath into the Moodpath app, patients can access additional Moodpath courses and exercises (for example, on pain, emotions, sleep, and mindfulness) and keep a mood diary, depending on their symptoms and needs. Unlike the exercises themselves, the therapist can view the patient's mood on the therapist platform and thus adapt the therapy to the patient's needs.
A formative evaluation within a pilot study examined the feasibility and acceptance of the interventions by both patients and therapists (Netter et al., 2022). The long-term goal of the project is to further adapt and optimize the interventions for long-term use in CBASP therapy.
